What Is Ifá?

Ifá is a divination system practiced primarily among the Yoruba people of Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, as well as in Afro-diasporic communities across the Americas and the Caribbean. It is both a spiritual practice and a philosophical worldview centered around balance, harmony, and personal destiny (known as "Ori").

The practice is centered on the belief that each person is born with a destiny or life path, and Ifá helps individuals align their actions with their true purpose. The divination process is performed by a trained priest known as a Babaláwo (for men) or Ìyánífá (for women), who serves as a spiritual guide, consulting the sacred texts and wisdom of Ifá to provide insight and guidance.

At the heart of Ifá divination is the Odù Ifá, a collection of ancient wisdom that holds the knowledge of the universe. This knowledge is accessed through divination tools such as the Opele chain or palm nuts, with the Babaláwo interpreting the patterns that emerge to reveal insights into the querent's life.
